The day I selected the dam of Gr.1 winner Kahma Lass

Congratulations to all of the connections of Kahma Lass, a dashing winner of today's $300,000 Barneswood Farm NZ 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 at Riccarton Park.

I well remember buying her dam Distinctive Lass (Orientate) during my time as Manager of 2019 NZ Breeder of the Year, Nearco Stud. It was at the 2011 William Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale. She sold very late on the the third day of the Select Session, making A$140,000 from the consignment of Yarraman Park Stud.

Dinstinctive Lass was carrying a foal by Denman which proved to be Kuro who went on to win five Listed Races & was twice placed at Gr.1 level. I planned her first mating back here in NZ which was Distinctive Darci (Darci Brahma), the winner of 10 in Singapore including a Black Type race. The next mating I put in place was Ocean Park; the resulting offspring being Southern Lad, the winner of 5 & Stakes-placed to date.

Kahma Lass, also by Darci Brahma becomes the third Black Type winner for Distinctive Lass and her first at Group One level.

Well done to breeder Nearco Stud, Gordon Cunningham at Curraghmore (raised all the NZ-based progeny from the mare), David Ellis (who selected Kahma Lass at Karaka), owners Brendan & Jo Lindsay and trainer Jamie Richards.
