New Zealand Bloodstock 3YO Filly of the Year Jennifer Eccles will return to the training stable on Monday, 18 May and trainer Shaune Ritchie and I have mapped out three possible spring programmes for her - Sydney or Melbourne or Hastings.
But the motto going forward is that we 'think on our feet', see how the filly is progressing, see what border restrictions are in place, what track conditions are like around Australasia and an eye too on what the key competition are doing. It may be that she races in one or two of the Hastings races & then heads to Australia for a run or two in either Sydney or Melbourne.
Jennifer Eccles' three-year-old season saw her win from 1600m to 2400m, but it should be remembered that she also won first-up at 1100m, only to the lose the race on protest. Clearly she is very versatile, so we have the luxury of looking far & wide for suitable opportunities.
Jennifer Eccles (Rip Van Winkle) has been enjoying a 5-Star holiday at Paul Pertab's agistment & breaking-in facility in Matamata since plans for a tilt at the Australian Oaks-Gr.1 were abandoned due to the Covid-19 lockdown. She will complete a full 8 weeks in the paddock before returning to work & has thrived during her time out.
