The photo you see is Tres Rapide (Noel Harris up), dam the Chris Waller-trained rising star stayer Kinane.
Today's piece is the back story to Kinane - in abbreviated form - and it starts with his grandam, Suriyan.
Suriyan (Savabeel) had been a $230,000 Karaka Premier Sale yearling graduate & showed great promise for Lance O'Sullivan & Andrew Scott. While she won a race, she was a story of not reaching her genuine potential. I purchased Suriyan cheaply as a Maiden mare privately for 2019 NZ Breeder of the Year Nearco Stud.
The first mating I planned for Suriyan was with Nom du Jeu, the Australian Derby-Gr.1 winner who had just been retired to Fairdale Stud on the outskirts of Palmerston North. Tres Rapide was the result. She was a terrific first foal and I recommended she be retained by Nearco Stud and she was leased out to my Challenge Syndications business. Like her mother, she showed terrific natural ability, firstly for John Sargent and then for John Bary when he original trainer set up base in Sydney. Unfortunately she broke down early in her 3YO season.
So off to stud went Tres Rapide under my management & I decided Reliable Man was the most suitable mating for her, with Kinane being the result. If there is a takeaway message here, it's this - the grandmother had great ability, so too did the mother. It would seem that Kinane is set to realise what his dam & grandam could only promise.
