As the 100th Cox Plate trophy goes on tour around New Zealand for a week from Saturday, one stop of note is at Ritchie Racing Stables in Cambridge on Thursday, 12 March. Not only will the 2020 Ladbrokes-sponsored trophy itself be there, so too will the former W S Cox Plate-winning trainers Frank Ritchie (Bonecrusher 1986) and John Wheeler (Our Poetic Prince 1988). Both are terrific characters and I will be interviewing them about winning one of the world’s great races. Also on hand will be the Shaune Ritchie 3YO filly star performer Jennifer Eccles who is set to start favourite in the El Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand Oaks-Gr.1 at Trentham Gardens, 14 March. Jennifer Eccles – who leads the NZB 3YO Filly of the Year Series – will be paraded and her trainer interviewed. Next week’s Cox Plate tour stop at Ritchie Racing Stables is open to the public and commences at 11am.
