Breeders' greatest satisfaction

Examples of my work | Five | 10 July 2020

Make no mistake, becoming a thoroughbred breeder is no walk in the park; it can be brutally tough at times. On the flip side is the tremendous satisfaction which happens when the process produces a terrific physical specimen which great judges want to buy. It gets even better when that horse goes on for its' new owners to be successful at Group One level.

I got a taste of that satisfaction during my 8 years as Manager of 2019 NZ Breeder of the Year, Nearco Stud.

I selected the mare Betwixt, in foal to Fastnet Rock, at the 2010 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. The second mating I planned for her was with Zabeel in 2011. Betwixt produced a magnificent filly by the super-sire and she was sold at the 2014 NZB Karaka Premier Sale for $250,000 - that's her in the photo on the left. The buyer was Paul Moroney, in my opinion, the very best judge in this country & right up there too from an Australasian standpoint.

The filly ended up in the very capable hands of Tony Pike and was named Provocative - that's her winning the 2016 Queensland Oaks-Gr.1 on the right.
